Festive Flurries to Start the Weekend

Posted: Updated:

A "clipper" is kicking off the holiday weekend. This system will bring "wimpy" snow chances to the Bluegrass tonight and early Saturday. By that I mean, not everyone will see a flake, and any snow that does fall won't amount to much at all. The LEX 18 StormTracker Severe Threat Index will remain at a "0."

This is the type of event I like to call a "snow globe" snowfall. We are tracking the potential for flurries and a few light snow showers. The snow will more or less just float around and be pretty. It won't create any big headaches or really start piling up. However, don't let your guard down if you will be travel through northern Kentucky. Even a light coating of snow can make road conditions slick.

The accumulating snowfall will bypass the Bluegrass. The heaviest and more persistent snow bands will remain well to our north across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and southwestern Pennsylvania. They could pick up a few inches up that way. Lake effect snow will enhance some of the totals closer to Lake Michigan and Lake Erie.

Back in the Commonwealth, any snow that starts to stick will be for areas north of I-64. Up to half an inch will be possible through Saturday morning. Working southward into the Bluegrass, a few snowy skiffs may pop up but that's it. Southern Kentucky will see nothing more than a few flakes, so no accumulation is expected.

While not everyone will get in on the snow, we will all see temperatures dive even further over the weekend. A fresh batch of Arctic air will bleed southward through the start of the new year. High temperatures will be held to the 20s with lows in the single digits. New Year's Day looks to be the coldest day of this second wave of cold with afternoon temperatures in the teens after starting off near zero!
