Women Worry About Human Trafficking In Kentucky After Reports Of Being Suspiciously Approached

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - A number of posts are circulating on social media about women in Kentucky who say they’re being suspiciously approached at stores.

Many of the women say when they’re out alone; someone comes up and asks them to join a bible study. But some worry that these people aren’t who they say they are, and that they could actually be dangerous.

“Told me that if I was interested, I could join their Bible study. But really couldn't give me any details about where it was or anything like that,” said Lexington resident Abbie Prater.

Several Facebook posts describing the same scenario as what Prater experiences are leading people to believe it actually a scheme to lure women into human sex trafficking.

“It’s terrifying that it can happen in Lexington, it can happen in Louisville, Bowling Green. Places where we would think that we would feel safe,” said Prater.

But Lexington Police say they've found no evidence of the group being involved in human sex trafficking.

Police say it's a group called "World Mission Society Church of God" based out of New Jersey, and in the past, the group has been accused of being a cult. Police say the organization recently opened a new chapter in the Louisville area and they may just be aggressively recruiting.

People who live in the area are still wary of others walking up to them.

“I’ve got two daughters and it's so scary to think something like that could have happened,” said Prater.
