Snow Covers Roads, Closes Schools

Posted: Updated:

(LEX 18) Central and southern Kentucky counties woke up to snowy streets for the New Year.

In areas like Corbin, many people stayed in because of the freezing temperatures. There weren't many drivers on the road due to the snowy roads.

Laurel County Schools also announced they will be closed Tuesday, as well as East Bernstadt Independent Schools. Other school districts in the Commonwealth have closed too. You can find a list of closings and delays here.

Matthew Lawson, who works for a snow removal company, told LEX 18 that he had been salting roads since 11 a.m. New Year's Day. He advises that anyone who decides to go out into this cold weather bring blankets to stay warm.

In Lincoln County, Lisa Folger said that despite the snow, there were plenty of chores to be done for the animals out on her farm.

"When it gets really cold, we stay in a lot, but the animals, we really check on them," said Folger. "We do just feed the calves once a day. Their feed, but we check on them a lot."

She dressed in layers of toboggans, gloves, jackets, and a pair of boots. Folger said that for farmers and other workers, the snow cannot stop them because there is work that has to be done.
