Shelter to Open In Georgetown for Women and Children

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, KY (Lex 18) - Starting Wednesday, women and children in need of an escape from the cold nights will have a shelter to go to in Scott County.

At 11:00 am Wednesday, The Gathering Place Mission will hold a ribbon cutting to celebrate opening a shelter meant for women and children off North Water Street.

Aside from a main bedroom, the shelter has three private rooms for families, a kid's area, and a kitchen.

The Mission credits a tireless board and giving community for the county's first ever emergency shelter for women and children.

"When we got the phone calls about people being on the street and not being able to have a place to go, we'd have to either send them to Lexington or Frankfort," said Denise Burkhead with the shelter.

At least 16 women and children will be able to escape sleeping on the streets every night. Volunteers expect it to be full by Friday.

"I'm going to suspect that this is going to full all the time, with us still having to utilize sending people to Lexington or Frankfort," said Burkhead.
