Investigation Discovery Chronicles High Profile Pike Co. Manslaughter Case

Posted: Updated:

(LEX 18) — A high profile manslaughter case involving an FBI agent and an informant will be featured on an episode of "The Perfect Suspect," an Investigation Discovery show.

The incident occurred in rural Pike County in 1989. Susan Smith, a pregnant woman, was found after an investigation involving FBI agent Mark Putnam.

Smith was a mother of two and wife of a local drug dealer. She became an informant for Agent Putnam and that relationship eventually led to a tumultuous affair.

According to multiple reports and a book about the case, Smith believed that Putnam was interested in starting a life with her. She was sadly mistaken. The couple was driving on a rural eastern Kentucky highway when she revealed her pregnancy. They pulled off the road at Peter Creek Mountain. Putnam said he and his wife would adopt the child but Smith refused and began slapping Putnam.

The agent recalled that ''in an act of extreme rage ... I started choking her and telling her to shut up.'' Putnam said he tried in vain to revive her.

Putnam served 10 of his 16-year prison sentence for manslaughter. He was released in 2000.

The high profile case garnered a lot of interest at the time. The recent movie "Above Suspicion" chronicles the case and was filmed in Kentucky in 2016.

Now, Investigation Discovery's newest show will chronicle the case. The episode, entitled "Kentucky Confidential," will air Thursday at 9 p.m. on ID. Check your local cable provider for listings.
