Winter Weather Watch for Western Counties

Posted: Updated:

The National Weather Service has issued a WINTER WEATHER WATCH for the areas that are likely to see the worst of the upcoming weekend winter storm. As of now, this watch does not include any of the counties in our forecast region, however, a good portion of the Ohio River Valley is included.

Can this watch be extended east to cover our central counties? Sure. At this time, current thinking as the worst of the storm (at least what warrants a Winter Storm Watch) will stay west of of.

What is included in a Winter Weather Watch?

A watch for winter weather means that confidence is growing that the storm could produce significant hazards due to wintry precipitation. Whether that precipitation is sleet, freezing rain, or snow is irrelevant. For the counties under the watch as of now all three types of precipitation are possible.

What can we expect?

For central and eastern Kentucky, the chances for the significant precipitation amounts are still up in the air (no pun intended). What we know right now, is that we WILL receive wintry precipitation Friday evening into Saturday morning. We WILL have accumulation of either ice, snow, or both. What is still being determined is how much will accumulate.

The National Weather Service is still under the impression that the worst of the storm will remain west of our forecast region. That being said, you should still be preparing for a winter event. Road conditions will deteriorate through the day Friday and remain poor through much of Saturday, if not the entire weekend.

The most important thing is to stick with the StormTracker Weather team as the system draws near so you can be best prepared for what we will see.
