LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (EKB) — A Letcher County man is in jail charged with torturing and killing a dog in the Colson community.
Jason Lucas, 39, was arrested Wednesday. A sheriff's official says the dog, named Spike, had gotten out of his yard and walked up the road.
She said Lucas shot Spike when he got into his yard.
And when Spike fled, deputies say Lucas and two other people allegedly followed him down the road and shot the dog at close range and in front of the 10-year-old grandson of the dog's owner.
Lucas initially claimed the dog had attacked another dog, prompting the initial shots, adding that he finished killing the dog in order to keep it from attacking children playing nearby.
But the deputy said the children stated the dog was not a threat to them, and her investigation found the dog posed no threat to any humans or animals the time of the incident.
Lucas was being held in the Letcher County Jail on a class D felony charge of torture of a dog or cat with serious physical injury or death.
