Tracking Friday's Winter Storm

Posted: Updated:

We are tracking our first significant winter storm of the season to hit Friday. The LEX 18 Winter Threat Index will be raised to a 2 or moderate risk. Significant snow and ice accumulations will be possible around central and eastern Kentucky. The timing of this system will also could lead to major travel headaches.

All of central and eastern Kentucky will go under a Winter Weather Advisory Friday morning. A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of freezing rain, sleet, and/or snow will cause travel difficulties. Areas west of Highway 127 will be under a Winter Storm Warning, which means significant accumulations will be possible, along with hazardous and impossible travel conditions. I wouldn't be surprised if the Winter Storm Warning is extended into the Bluegrass. Download the *free* LEX 18 StormTracker Weather app to get the latest weather alerts.

We will have a long laundry list of precipitation types to track Friday. The day will start off balmy with rain. Showers will continue through the better part of the morning. Around lunch the colder air will begin to creep towards the Bluegrass. We are tracking a period of freezing rain and sleet during the early afternoon. Snow will be falling by the evening commute for central Kentucky. The colder air will continue to rush eastward, changing the liquid precipitation over to snow. Light icy accumulations and the snow will make for a difficult travel conditions Friday evening through Saturday. Snow showers will start winding down by the second half of Saturday.

Now what everyone wants to know. How much snow are we going to get? This will be the first significant winter event of the season, and the biggest event in two years. We are tracking three to six inches for the Bluegrass. Higher amounts is expected north and west of Lexington with slightly lower amounts south and east. The Lake Cumberland area will also have to deal with some minor ice accumulations.

A slower transition from freezing rain to snow will result in smaller snowfall amounts. A quick transition will put us on the high end of those ranges.

The LEX 18 StormTracker Weather team will have the latest weather updates all-day Friday. Follow Bill, Tom, Seth, and Jill on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates in between newscast. And check out the Weather page and the LEX 18 StormTracker app for the latest weather conditions.

DETROIT (AP) — Ford is recalling about 550,000 cars and SUVs in North America to fix a gearshift problem that could cause the vehicles to roll away unexpectedly. The recall covers certain 2013 through 2016 Fusion sedans and some 2013 and 2014 Escape small SUVs. Ford says a bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission can fall off.
