Doctors Asking People Not To Eat Laundry Pods

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - What seems to be one of the trendiest memes of 2018 is resulting in doctors to have to ask their patients to not do something that seems pretty self-explanatory.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital is asking people to stop eating laundry pods. The aesthetic design of some brands of the pods has resulted in internet users creating memes showing people eating them, despite ad campaigns dedicated to protecting children from eating them.

The ads weren't targeted towards adults and it seems that despite ample warnings, some teenagers record themselves purposely eating the pods. Medical experts warn that swallowing the contents of a detergent packet can cause life-threatening effects including coma, fluid in lungs and breathing failure.

When children bite down on a packet, they can burst, sending toxic chemicals quickly down the throat.
