An Emoji Display Lets Other Road Users Know What You Think

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A California-based company has created an emoji display allowing drivers to communicate with each other on the road.

The CarWink display - shown for the first time at the CES electronics show - lets drivers send friendly messages and warn of obstacles ahead.

This is the CarWink, a display that shows emojis that are sent via Bluetooth from people's phones.

The idea is simple: it lets users display emojis to communicate with other drivers, and to warn of traffic situations ahead - such as a pedestrian crossing.

The device - made by California-based Innovart Designs - has raised over 100,000 US dollars in crowdfunding and will go in to production this year.

"Sometimes when I'm driving and pass someone's car, someone will yield the car for me. So, I want to say thank you to them. This is how I use the thank you function," says Wei Cheng Chu, inventor of CarWink.

There are no frowning faces or middle finger emojis. The idea is to make people smile on the road.

"Nowadays people have a lot of road rage on the roads. So we created this kind of gadget to decrease the road rage," says Wei Cheng Chu.

The CarWink was shown for the first time at the CES consumer electronics show in Las Vegas.
