Early Week Clipper: What You Need to Know

Posted: Updated:

Just as we're getting the sunshine out after the past winter storm, we're already focusing on the next system making a run for Kentucky. With temperatures squarely below freezing, it is expected to be a straight snow event. However, due to it being a mostly dry and cold clipper, it will not have much to work with when talking precipitation.

Models are having a difficult time with this clipper. The National Weather Service is putting out number between 1” and 2” for the entire state. While I think some areas may reach this, I think generally we stay less than an inch for most locations.

For the Bluegrass and South-Central Kentucky, up to an inch is likely what we'll pick up. The Eastern Counties may see a little more (up to 1.5”) due to the front stalling a bit as it reaches the Appalachians. This is less than what we picked up from the last storm, but will likely still cause road concerns for Monday evening into Tuesday afternoon.

Due to surface and ground temperatures remaining at freezing or below before this event, it won't take long for snow to start accumulating. Expect a slippery go on the roads, shoulders, turn lanes, bridges, and overpasses.

A secondary blast of cold air arrives after the front passes, and that will take temperatures back into the single digits for the middle of the week. If you like the spring-like weather we had last week, we get another shot at some warmth next weekend. It's the "pendulum effect" as the atmosphere goes from one extreme to the next until it achieves a balance.
