Tracking an Extended January Thaw

Posted: Updated:

Last week we got a taste of a January thaw. It may have only lasted two days but it was a BIG warm up. Record highs were tied or broken in Lexington last Wednesday and Thursday. Friday's winter storm then ushered in an Arctic siege.

Slowly but surely temperatures have been warming up this past week. It even felt balmy today with highs near 50°. This extended January thaw will continue through Monday. Highs will climb to between 15 and 20 degrees above average.

Most, if not all, of the recent ice and snow has melted during this warming trend. In fact just today, Lexington went from a snow depth of two inches this morning to a trace by late day. And that all happened with very little help from sunshine. Any snow that is left will continue to melt Sunday and Monday. What the warm air doesn't take care of will be melted by rain early next week.

This mild surge will ramp up chances for rain on Monday. We are also tracking a small chance for showers Sunday. (Most of the activity will be during the morning hours.) A system currently across the Rockies and Plains will track into the Bluegrass on Monday. Rain will become likely during the afternoon before wrapping up by Tuesday morning. We are tracking rainfall amounts between a quarter and half an inch. This amount of rain and the little bit of snow on the ground shouldn't cause any widespread flooding concerns.
