Company Responds To Accusation Of Profiting From 'Kentucky Strong' T-Shirt Sales

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — In the aftermath of the Marshall County High School shooting, Shop Local Kentucky designed a "Kentucky Strong" shirt. And 100 percent of all proceeds from the sales are being donated to the families of those affected.

Shop Local Kentucky unveiled the "Kentucky Strong" shirts last week. They are blue and orange to match the colors of Marshall County High School. In the first week of sales, the shirt raised over $120,000.

Then the owner and designer of the shirt noticed last night that a San Francisco-based company was selling a similar shirt online.

Rick Paynter tweeted at @teespring to ask them to remove the shirt.

"I think that's confusion in the marketplace, that creates confusion amongst customers, and ours is being sold to go to the victims," Paynter told LEX 18.

The company asked him to file a claim but eventually agreed to remove the item and ban the user who submitted the design.

The design itself is not copyrighted, but none of the proceeds was going to the families of the victims.

You can order your shirt on Shop Ky Local's website.
