(LEX 18) Doctors warn this year's flu is a bad one and because so many people have been getting sick, pharmacies are getting lots of prescriptions for Tamiflu.
Medical experts say that Tamiflu helps, but at times, it can be difficult to find and there are reports about strange side effects that are possible when taking the drug.
In some cases, chain pharmacies have struggled to restock the medicine. Small, independent pharmacies are more likely to keep it in stock.
"We can shop with multiple wholesalers so if our primary wholesaler doesn't have it, we can reach out to other parties - other secondary wholesalers so that helps keep our stock up," said Justin Bell, a pharmacist at Georgetown Pharmacy.
Other local pharmacies say that they are having a bit more trouble getting the children's strength Tamiflu and recent reports have come out about children behaving strangely while taking the medicine. The company that makes Tamiflu warns about neuropsychiatric events as a side effect and says that children should be monitored.
When pharmacists aren't filling prescriptions for Tamiflu, they are giving out the flu shots. Doctors say it is not too late to get one.
