Organization Seeks To Bring Attention To Martin County Water Council

Posted: Updated:

INEZ, Ky. (LEX 18) - Weeks after LEX 18 first reported about the Martin County water shortage, a local organization is trying to bring national attention to the dire situation.

Martin County is one of the poorest counties in the United States. The rural Kentucky community is experiencing catastrophic failures of its aging water system with water supplies being shut off to residents, schools and businesses.

The system is so broken that water cannot adequately get to the residents, with only 40 percent of water delivered due to leaky, aging pipes. Schools have been closed more than ten days in the month of January 2018 alone due to water being turned off from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. When there is no water, schools can’t open as the restrooms can’t be used, the food service can’t be served, and the schools can’t be cleaned.

An immediate impact of the school closures are the more than 350 children in the community that eat the majority of their meals at school that go hungry.

Martin County Water District is planning on asking for a nearly 50% increase. If the proposed rate increase goes through, the average water bill will be more than $63 a month.

RAMP, an organization founded to fight poverty in Appalachia, is working with the Southeast Produce Council, God’s Food Pantry as well as other donors, to get food and water delivered to the community.
