Erin Brockovich Weighs In On Martin County Water Debate

(LEX 18) - Environmentalist and activist Erin Brockovich has lent her voice to the debate on the Martin County Water District's catastrophic water issues.

The consumer advocate posted to her Facebook page after sharing a Herald-Leader article on the situation.

"This is shameful... people should not live this way in the United States of America...The Kentucky Division of Water is charged with responsibility to ensure public health protection through primacy of the Safe Drinking Water Act and the provision of potable water. "Primacy" refers to primary enforcement responsibility awarded to the state by the United States Environmental Protection Agency in 1977," wrote Brockovich.

Residents in Martin County say they are frustrated because they lost their water for nearly a week earlier this month, without any notice. Now the county water district has applied to increase their rates by nearly fifty percent.

Brockovich encouraged people to contact the Governor's office to bring attention to the matter.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18) — Appearing on "The Brian Thomas Show" Tuesday morning, Gov. Matt Bevin referred opponents of pension reform as "drowning victims" who need to be "knocked out" for their own good. The governor was talking about the battle he has fought over Senate Bill 151. He told Thomas that the pension system had to be saved, but it was difficult when those affected by the bill continued to fight him.
