Posted: Updated:

CYNTHIANA, Ky. (LEX 18) — A friend helped save a man's pets from home fire overnight in Cynthiana.

The fire sparked around 11 p.m. on Old Lair Road.

Zach Gaunce says he was driving by when he saw smoke. He said he ran into the house to check on his friend, but was turned back by flames.

He found his friend outside the home, then decided to run back into the burning home to try to save his friend's pet bird.

"So I run around the back and kick in the back door and I made it to about the kitchen and the smoke, it just, engulfed everything," Gaunce said. "I lost track of where I was. I couldn't see nothing."

Neither man was hurt in the fire. The owner said he's still not sure if his bird made it out alive.

Firefighters were able to strike the fire quickly but said the house sustained heavy damage.

The heat also damage the siding on a nearby house.

Officials said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

I was hoping that I would just get ran over by the kids running in the door, just barrel-rushing me, but it...
