Dispatchers In Marshall Co. Talk About Day Of Shooting

Posted: Updated:

MARSHALL COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) Some of the first people to hear about the shooting at Marshall County High School were 9-1-1 dispatchers.

There is 30 years experience between dispatchers Maranda Hanson and Tonya Clevidence, but nothing could prepare them for what they heard that Tuesday morning.

A student opened fire at Marshall County High and the two women had to continuously take calls and relay important information to police and hospitals.

"I mean I think the hardest part for me, and probably for you too, was having to disconnect from kids who were scared, um, it was really hard for me when I had kids begging me to stay on the phone with them and I couldn't, because, my thought was, maybe the next caller knows where he is," said Hanson.

It only lasted 12 minutes, but for Hanson and Clevidence felt more like 12 hours.

Hanson's daughter is a junior at the school and was home sick the day before the shooting. Hanson went into work early the next morning and wasn't sure if her daughter was back at school during the shooting or not.

The two women are finding strength in each other, their families, and their community.

"You're at where God puts you. you're placed there. you know it," said Clevidence.
