11 Flu Deaths Reported In Lexington

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - Officials confirm that two more flu deaths have been reported in Lexington this season, increasing the number of dead to 11.

Kentucky's death toll from the flu this year has already reached 100, including at least four children who have died from what is being called an "epidemic."

This season’s H3N2 strain of the flu virus can be extremely serious, even deadly, not just for those in higher risk categories but to generally healthy Kentuckians as well.Kentucky is in its seventh consecutive week of widespread flu activity which is the highest level of flu activity and indicates increased flu-like activity or flu outbreaks in at least half of the regions in the state. The flu season runs through late May. During the 2016-17 flu season, Kentucky recorded 76 deaths.

The most common flu type identified in Kentucky at this time is influenza A. A healthy person with influenza also will usually miss three to five days of work, school.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers these tips to stop the spread of germs:

  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
  • If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine).
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.

FREDERICK, Colo. (AP) — After his pregnant wife and two daughters disappeared, Christopher Watts stood on his porch in Colorado and lamented to reporters how much he missed them. He longed for the simple things, he said, like telling his girls to eat their dinner and gazing at them as they curled up to watch cartoons. “Last night, I had every light in the house on. I was hoping that I would just get ran over by the kids running in the door, just barrel-rushing me, but it...
