How To Help The Homeless When Winter Weather Hits

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - As the bitterly cold weather sticks around, folks at Lexington's Hope Center are urging caring community members to think twice about how they help our homeless population.

On any normal day, a thoughtful good samaritan may see giving change as a way to help a cold stranger, but Carrie Thayer, Executive Director for the Hope Center, says sometimes, that transaction does more harm than good.

"If they stay out on the streets, and out in the cold, they are not going to be able to address any of the issues that are keeping them homeless," Carrie Thayer told LEX 18. "You want your actions to encourage them to come in for help."

And that's why staff and faculty like Carrie Thayer at the Hope Center want you to reconsider what you give this season.

"I've heard clients who have been out on the streets say that, when enough people were giving me the information and encouraging me to get help, that made an impact," Thayer mentioned.

Jesse Douglas, a Lexington homeless veteran, says he agrees with what the Hope Center staff are urging community members to do, and says money isn't always everything.

"Somebody goes next door to the liquor store, get drunk, then they lay out in the snow and that's when they freeze," Douglas stated. "A lot of people have problems with alcohol and drugs, and panhandling's one thing. But if you give them something, give them food. Give them a hot meal. Take them over to McDonald's, buy them a meal and say have a good night. And I think that would help more than anything else."
