Declutter: Minimalist Kentucky Woman Helps People Clean Home

Posted: Updated:

(LEX 18) Some people are buried in clutter at home and cleaning up and cleaning out is always easier said than done. LEX 18's Leigh Searcy spoke with a Lexington woman who has helped thousands move to a more minimalist way of living.

Robin Shliakhau says she wanted more time with family and more hikes in the Gorge, but there was always stuff to clean up in her small home. She made a move thinking that more space would help.

"We bought a house that was two times larger than one we lived in," said Shliakhau.

But for Shliakhau, double the mess meant double the problems.

"We all think about, Oh, I just need to be organized. That's not the whole story. The story is we have too much stuff," she said.

So she decided to declutter and clean house. This led to her blog, Simplify and Pursue. She's helped many people become minimalist and cut through their clutter.

"That's just moving it around from place to place, you've got to get rid of things," said Shliakhau.

Outside of her day job, Shliakhau makes house calls to people who just cannot get their stuff in order.

Leigh Searcy decided to let Shliakhau help her clean out her home.

"I see a busy family that has a lot going on, a lot of things coming in, not a lot going out," Shliakhau told Searcy.

Shliakhau said there are four key steps to decluttering. Number one is being mentally ready to disown things. Next, choose an area, then empty the space. Finally, sort!

"If you think about that 80/20 principle we hear so much about, we use 20 percent of our things 80 percent of the time so there is only a small amount of things that are truly essential," said Shliakhau.

Searcy ended up boxing several things to donate. During her time with Searcy, Shliakhua shared some startling numbers about clutter. In the article, 'Becoming Minimalists', it states the average American home has 300,000 items in it. Even though the average home size has nearly tripled in size in the past 50 years, 25% of people with two-car garages can't park their cars in them.
