Juvenile Charged With Murder In Connection With Lafayette Student's Death

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Two Fayette County students, both 15 years old,  were shot overnight. One victim, who died from his injuries, was a Lafayette High School student.

The shooting occurred about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 2100 block of Garden Springs Drive near Cypress Drive.

Neighbors tell LEX 18 that they heard several "pops" that sounded like gunshots.   One of the victims was pronounced dead immediately upon arrival. The victim has been identified as 15-year-old Kevin Olmeda.

There was a report of a car fleeing the area after the gunshots were heard. Police said a preliminary investigation indicates the shooting might have been related to a drug transaction.

Police have arrested a 16-year-old juvenile and charged the juvenile with Murder, Assault 1st, and Robbery 1st. Detectives determined that the suspect and victim were acquaintances. The juvenile is currently lodged in the Fayette Regional Juvenile Detention Center.

On Wednesday night, less than 24 hours after Kevin was killed, his friends and family gathered for a vigil.

The mourners took the same walk Kevin did just one night ago. They knelt over the same spot where they held Kevin, waiting for help.

"My dad was the first one to find him. I came across him right as his heart stopped beating," said Joaquin Olmeda. "Just a really tragic end to a beautiful life."

Family and friends prayed while pouring holy water, leaving behind flowers and candles on the spot where their beloved Kevin took his final step.

"I still love everybody, I hold no hatred. But it really does hurt me that my brother had to leave me this way," said Joaquin.

School officials confirm that guidance counselors have been dispatched to the school. The other victim is in critical condition.
