Lexington Firefighters Smoke Detector Installation Program Needs Donations

LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) Lexington Firefighters are making a plea to the community after their smoke detectors installation program has come to a screeching halt.

"Smoke alarms are the cheapest form of life insurance you can get for your family," said Chief Joe Best.

Three out of five deaths across the nation happen in homes without working smoke alarms and Lexington is consistent with that average.

"We had six fire fatalities last year in homes without working smoke alarms here in this county," he said.

Firefighters are working to bring that number down by installing free smoke alarms in Lexington homes, but they are dependent on donations and grants and they are currently out of money.

Each alarm is $14 and they place an average of four in every home they visit. There are currently 100 homes in the city on a waiting list for the smoke alarms.

"That's anywhere from 100-500 people that aren't currently protected in Lexington and there's actually many, many more," said Best,

To help the firefighters, donate online through the fraternal order of firefighters here, or mail a check with the memo smoke alarms on it. You can mail the check to:

FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18) — Appearing on "The Brian Thomas Show" Tuesday morning, Gov. Matt Bevin referred opponents of pension reform as "drowning victims" who need to be "knocked out" for their own good. The governor was talking about the battle he has fought over Senate Bill 151. He told Thomas that the pension system had to be saved, but it was difficult when those affected by the bill continued to fight him.
