NYC's Brooklyn Academy of Music names new artistic director

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - A New York City arts center that claims to be the oldest continually operating performing arts center in the country has named a Broadway producer as its new artistic director.

David Binder - who has produced Broadway shows such as the 2004 revival of "A Raisin in the Sun" and the musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" - will succeed Brooklyn Academy of Music Executive Producer Joseph Melillo. Melillo is leaving at the end of this year after three decades at the Brooklyn arts center.

BAM has a long history in New York City since its founding in 1861. The New York Times reports the nonprofit is one of the city's leading arts centers, with an annual budget of $50 million and a yearly audience of 750,000.
