Anonymous Donation Made After Girl Scout's Cookie Money Stolen

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: A viewer saw LEX 18's story Thursday and donated $600 to Melinda Shay's girl scout troop.

SCOTT COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) It's that time again, Girl Scot cookies are up for sale. The cookies are hard to turn down, so Girl Scouts often collect quite a bit of cash. One Scott County teen had $600 of her cookie money stolen when a fire alarm was pulled at her school.

Melinda Shay sells cookies at Scott County High School where she is a senior. Recently, someone stole her money when a student pulled a fire alarm creating an emergency. During the false alarm, Shay left her blue bag in the band room, never thinking anyone would grab the cash she keeps in a pencil pouch.

"You don't assume people are going to steal from you in an emergency," she said.

Shay hopes that whoever took the money will return it because the money pays for Girl Scout programs.

"I'm a senior, I'm graduating, this money isn't going to benefit me. I wanted to pay it forward for another girl," she said.

The local Girl Scout Council of the Bluegrass will cover the loss, but Shay hopes that the thief will make it right.

"You trust the good in people, and I guess that is a fault of mine I should have known better as a businesswoman to keep my change at home," she said.
