UK Cheerleaders Prepare For Olympics

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) They're a cheerleading dynasty, chosen for a once in a lifetime opportunity.

The 23 time National Champion University of Kentucky Cheerleaders were picked to wear red, white, and blue and represent Team USA at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The team announced they were chosen to travel to South Korea in late November before the National Championship Competition, which was in January. Before they could go into full celebration mode, they had to win another title.

"I told them and it really kind of took a little bit of the hooplah off of it, because I didn't want them to lose their focus," said coach Jomo Thompson.

For senior Josh Marsh, this opportunity has been a long-time coming, Cheering has been a big part of his life from a very young age, his mom even owns a gym in their hometown.

"I made the announcement my mom started screaming this is what we were hoping for and praying for since I was a little kid," he said.

The team had a week off after arriving back in Kentucky from Nationals, and then it was full practice mode. They stay busy with school and long hours in the gym.

Senior Kelsey Lacroix thinks her nerves won't settle until they get to South Korea.

"It won't sink in until we get there. Seeing all of the countries when we are there will definitely help it sink in for sure," said Lacroix.

After cheering on all of Team USA's athletes, they will compete in a competition of their own against seven other countries. The team hopes that an Olympic win will be another checkmark off the program's already incredible resume.
