Local Teen Hopes To One Day Compete In Olympics

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) Every two years we see dreams come true at the Olympics, but every dream has to start somewhere. LEX 18's Claire Couch spoke with one aspiring figure skater in Lexington to find out what it takes.

Skye Roberts is 16-years-old. She does chores at home and studies at Dunbar. Saturday she will even take the ACT.  On top of all that, this teen pushes herself to the limit for her sport.

Roberts skates up to five days a week for hours at a time.

"I work here too so I'm here a lot. This place is my home," she said.

It takes a lot of dedication to live your dream.

"I can express myself on the ice," she said. "I can do whatever and I can get my emotions out."

Roberts has been skating for more than half her life, spinning, jumping, and sometimes even falling, but she always gets back up. Throughout most of her career, Coach June Warta has been by her side. Warta has watched Sky go from a young inexperienced skater to a dedicated and determined young woman.

"We've had our bumps in the road hurdled a lot of things but we're still going at it," said Warta.

Roberts says that she feels excitement in the air during the Olympics, calling them an ultimate goal.

"It'd be great if I could go to the Olympics one day, that's everybody's dream," she said.
