Eastern Kentucky University junior forward Nick Mayo has been voted the Ohio Valley Conference Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Mayo averaged 27.0 points and 5.0 rebounds-per-game last week. The native of Oakland, Maine dropped a career-high 36 points on UT Martin on Thursday night, which is tied for the most by an OVC player in any game this season. He connected on a career-high seven three-pointers and finished 13-of-21 from the field against the Skyhawks. He also pulled down five rebounds and dished out an assist.
Mayo followed that up by scoring a game-high 18 points in EKU’s thrilling 75-73 win over rival Morehead State on Saturday. He added five rebounds, one assist, one steal and four blocks in the win. The four blocks tied Mayo for the EKU career record in that category (115).
Mayo shot 55.9 percent (19-of-34) from the field and 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from deep during the week. He now leads the OVC in three-point field goal percentage (48.4 percent) and he is one of only two players in the OVC (Belmont’s Amanze Egekeze) to rank in the league’s top-15 in all three shooting percentage categories. He is 11th in field goal percentage (51.8 percent) and eighth in free throw percentage (82.9 percent).
After pouring in 54 points over two games last week, Mayo now ranks third in the conference in scoring at 17.1 points-per-game.
He shares this week’s honor with Southeast Missouri guard Denzel Mahoney.
Mayo and the Colonels hit the road this week to face Belmont on Thursday night and Tennessee State on Saturday night in Nashville.
