Estill Co. Group Asks State Leaders To Remove Radioactive Waste From Landfill

Posted: Updated:

ESTILL COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) About two years since it was discovered that radioactive waste was illegally dumped at an Estill County landfill, the state is moving closer to coming up with a plan to fix the issue. A group of Estill County citizens asked that it all be removed and they are hoping to convince state leaders that it's the solution.

Rhonda Childers, an Irvine citizen, is standing strong with concerned citizens of the county. The group she is involved in, Concerned Citizens of Estill County, announced Monday that it has submitted a plan for a solution to the State Energy and Environment Cabinet. Their solution is to remove the radioactive waste from the Blue Ridge Landfill.

Between July 2015 and February 2016, more than 1,100 tons of radioactive waste from West Virginia and Ohio was dumped illegally at Blue Ridge. The waste impacts water streams and the Kentucky River. The landfill is right across the street from Estill County High School and Middle School.

"It's unjust to now burden this community with this uncertain level of risk going forward," said attorney Mary Comer.

Comer is working with Concerned Citizens of Estill County to get the waste removed.

"The risk is going to be to public health, it's going to be to the environment and it 's going to be a financial risk," said Comer.

Right now, the state is considering leaving the waste in place and upgrading and increasing the coverage over the material. That solution was developed by the landfill. The landfill cites cost concerns and other health impacts as reasons to keep the waste where it is.
