Man Wanted For Attempted Murder In KY Arrested In IL

Posted: Updated:

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. (WPSD)-- A man arrested in Illinois is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, in Kentucky.

The sheriff’s department says around 10 p.m. Sunday, 42-year-old Shawn Sutton broke into a Kevil area home and stole some firearms. The residents were not home at the time of the burglary.

Deputies say Sutton then broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home on Gordon Drive and shot 38-year-old Troy Risley with a .357 magnum pistol he had stolen from the nearby home. Risley was dating Sutton’s ex-girlfriend. He was shot in the face and the arm.

After the shooting, Sutton drove away in a pickup truck, which became stuck in a field. Sutton then ran away on foot. Deputies found the pickup truck and learned that it had been stolen out of Kansas. Inside the pickup truck, deputies found the other firearms stolen from the burglary.

The search went on overnight and around 10:30 a.m. Monday, a gas drive-off was reported from Pughs Midway BP. Surveillance video showed that it was Sutton and the car was registered to a person who lived close to the shooting. Deputies found the car’s owner who did not know their car was taken.

Deputies then contacted Illinois State Police and Metropolis Police asking them to check some locations Sutton was known to frequent, one of which was a home near Karnak, Illinois.

Trooper did find the stolen car at a home near Karnak. Before backup units could arrived, Sutton was seen leaving the home and getting into the car.

The car was followed and stopped at the intersection of US Highway 45 North and Illinois Highway 169 West. Sutton was arrested without incident and taken to the Massac County Jail.

Sutton will be extradited back to McCracken County. He does face charges in Illinois and the following charges in McCracken County:

  • Attempted murder
  • Assault 1st degree
  • 2 counts of burglary 1st degree
  • Possession of handgun by convicted felon
  • Knowingly receiving stolen property (auto)
  • Theft by unlawful taking (auto)

Additional charges are possible as the investigation continues. The victim was taken to an out-of-state hospital where he was last listed in serious but stable condition.
