NEWPORT, Ky. (WLWT)-- Parents in Newport are reaching out for help after their car was stolen with something very valuable inside: their 3-year-old son Jordan's wheelchair.

"The wheelchair is his legs, and they've taken his legs from him," Jordan's father, John Eckert, said.

It's been a difficult 24 hours for Eckert and Jessica Russell.

"I am sick to my stomach," Russell said. "I am livid. I have a lot of different feelings and emotions, really."

Their 2016 blue Toyota Rav-4 was stolen Sunday afternoon while they were warming it up in their driveway.

"At the end of the day, it was our fault," Eckert said. "We did it, you know."

Eckert and Russell both said the car isn't important, but the wheelchair is.

"It's horrible. You can't give him his legs. You can do that. You can't give him something to wheel around on. It's not that easy. It was custom made for him," Eckert said.

Jordan was born with spina bifida and is paralyzed because of it. Jordan received his custom wheelchair less than a year ago.

He relies on it to get around and to go to school.

Russell said it took a lot of time to even get the wheelchair for Jordan, and it was gone in an instant.

Jordan’s parents said the wheelchair costs around $7,000 to replace. Friends have set up a YouCaring fundraiser.

They are not sure at this time if insurance will replace it, or how long it will take.

If you have information that could help police, you are asked to call the Newport Police Department at 859-292-3622.
