MOREHEAD, Ky. (LEX 18) — An investigation in Rowan County into alleged narcotic cough syrup distribution has resulted in the arrest of five people - including three Saudi Arabian nationals.
The Rowan County Sheriff's Office says its deputies executed a search warrant last week at Morehead residence after weeks of investigation.
Sheriff Matt Sparks tells LEX 18 that deputies were surprised to find much more than contraband cough syrup when officers searched an apartment in the 900 block of Christian Street.
Along with prescription codeine cough syrup, officers recovered three handguns, more than $5,000 cash, about 1,000 Xanax pills and nearly 10 pounds of medical marijuana. Sparks said the marijuana was labeled as medical grade and was believed to have been shipped from California.
Police arrested on scene were Haidar Alquallaf, 28, Mohammed Alkhathlan, 25, and Aliredah Alsihati, 23. According to Sparks, the three are Morehead State University students from Saudi Arabia.
Also arrested were Mayslick residents Jonathan Ray Garrison, 24, and Tobias K. Jackson, 25.
Sparks said Garrison and Jackson brought the marijuana to Morehead from Mason County.
