GoFundMe Set Up For Family Of 15-Year-Old Shooting Victim

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) It has been one week since 15-year-old Kevin Olmeda Ortiz was fatally shot on Garden Springs. His heartbroken parents sat down with LEX 18 to talk about their son and the community that's looking out for them.

The home of Joaquin and Lorena Ortiz is filled with bouquets of flowers, candles, and pictures of their son, Kevin. All of these remind them of how well their son was loved in Lexington.

"It's heartbreaking," said Joaquin. "Because we never expected a response from the community, you know? He was such a happy boy. He knew there was nothing that his parents wouldn't do for him."

To emphasize how well the teen was loved, a good friend and coworker of Lorena's, Shirley Jane Murphy, set up a GoFundMe page to help keep the family afloat as they take time off to mourn. Through tears, Joaquin and Lorena told LEX 18 that they're moved to tears by Murphy's actions.

"Thank you so much, Shirley, because, I don't have time for text messages. My heart is very broke," said Lorena.

"We try not to bother anybody. We are just an honest family and we didn't expect that," said Joaquin.

The Ortiz family also has a message for the 16-year-old charged in Kevin's murder.

"From the bottom of our heart, we forgive him," Joaquin said.
