CLARK COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18/WINCHESTER SUN) — An effort to raise money to buy a new transport van for the Clark County Animal Shelter has passed the halfway mark but more help is needed.

The Winchester Sun reports that the Friends of the Clark County Animal Shelter Inc., a nonprofit organization formed to raise those funds, has collected more than $21,000 of its $40,000 goal.

NOTE: The $40,000 includes the cost of a base model van (about $35,000- we are looking at a Dodge Promaster or a Ford Transit for the square shape which would allow more animals as there were many trips that animals were left behind due to space in the previous van), also the cost of 1 year of full coverage insurance(about $2,000), the cost to replace the pet crates that were lost in the accident (about $2,000) and the estimated cost for 1 long distance transport ($1,000).

The shelter's previous van was totaled in a wreck in January.

“The van rolled to its side and skidded down the highway for some distance before coming to a stop,” according to a FOCCAS Facebook post. “The driver was transported to the hospital with a severe injury to his arm."

“Miraculously, all of the animals were accounted for and none were seriously injured. The driver is still recovering but is expected to be fine as well.”

The already aging van was not fine, though.

FOCCAS is asking for donations toward a goal of raising $40,000 by Feb. 15 to replace the van.

Shelter Director Adreanna Wills said the previous van was used about twice a month to transport animals to rescue groups in the northeast.

Donations can be made at www.friendsoftheclarkcountyanimalshelter.org or by mail to Friends of the Clark County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 4795, Winchester, KY 40392.

RICHMOND, Ky. (LEX 18) — Shoplifting is a crime that stores and police can't always catch. An organized retail crime unit spearheaded by Kroger has been active in different parts of Kentucky during the last year. This past week, they were in Richmond, which ended up being their most successful stop yet.
