Heavy Rain Causes Issues In Owen County

Posted: Updated:

OWEN COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) - In Owen County, the heavy rain led to high water and mudslides which shut down stretches of roads across the area.

After hours of pounding rain, the earth came sliding onto Highway 355. This was the third mudslide in Owen County needing clean-up.

"I saw pictures on Facebook of the landslide in front of our driveway, and we just wanted to see what it was like," said Janie Prather.

Just hours earlier, Prather and her husband couldn't have made the drive because other parts of Highway 355 were under water.

"Because the Kentucky River gets over the slews up toward Perry Park. And it also gets over the straightaway down here toward Worthville," said Prather.

The good news is that the water did recede from the road, and the only damage at their home was a fallen mailbox.
Behind their home, the river had swallowed up trees and 50 yards of the backyard.

"Usually it's eight feet in the summer, and last time I checked the gauge, it was 35 feet. So it's pretty deep," said Prather.

The water was much higher in this area in 1997, Prather says that the water reached all the way up to the top of the stairs, but did not get inside the home.

The fear leading into the weekend was a repeat of 20 years ago. But with more rain on the way, no one is letting their guard down just yet.
