Winchester Couple Charged With Death Of Their Special Needs Son

Posted: Updated:

WINCHESTER, Ky. (LEX 18) - A Winchester couple is in jail after their special needs child died from what sheriff's officials are calling neglect.

Albert and Patsy Christy were in charge of the care of their 20-year-old child with Down syndrome. In December of 2017, deputies were called to their home for an unresponsive victim.

According to the complaint, Patsy Christy told deputies she had just fed her son 13 minutes before calling 911 when he collapsed. Upon arrival, however, officials say they found the victim extremely malnourished and living in extremely deplorable conditions.

An autopsy indicated that the victim died from pneumonia complicated by malnourishment and neglect and that despite claims to the contrary, there was no food in the victim's stomach.

Further investigation shows that the Christy family had applied for state assistance until the child reached the age of 18. After his 18th birthday, deputies say that the family stopped applying for state benefits that would have helped provide for him.
