Western Hills High Field House Dedicated To Late Middle School Student

Posted: Updated:

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) After his 13-year-old son drowned four years ago, A Frankfort father has decided to do something special for Western Hills High School in memory of his child.

Ricky Lane Harris III was a Bondurant Middle School athlete when he died after drowning in Transylvania University's pool back in 2014. 2018 was going to be a special year for him and that is why his father, Ricky Harris Jr., is honoring him by providing a new field house for the athletes at Western Hills High School.

"This next school year, 18-19', would have been his son's senior year. So he wanted to do something for the school district in honor of his son," said Western Hills High School Greg Roush.

The idea of the new field house first came around when Harris Jr. approached school officials in the fall. In January 2018, Superintendent Mark Kopp says that the Franklin County Board of Education listened to the field house proposal. All members were on board with it.

"It's a great opportunity to honor someone's memory, and what better way to honor that memory for every student-athlete who's going to have a chance to participate and be able to use this field house, this donation, to really honor the memory of this young man," said Superintendent Mark Kopp.

Plans for the new field house include a locker room and coach's office. It will be placed near the current field house. The old field house will be used as the field house for Western Hills female athletes and a locker room for visiting teams.

Western Hills School Officials say they hope to have the new field house up and running and formally dedicated by the next football season.
