Urban County Government Votes To Support Legalizing Medical Cannabis

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government held a special meeting Tuesday to discuss a resolution encouraging Kentucky to pass a medical cannabis legislation.

The resolution passed with a unanimous vote. The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council is now urging the Kentucky General Assembly to consider legalizing medical cannabis.

Tuesday night's docket originally mentioned House Bill 166, which would legalize medical cannabis in Kentucky.

Vice Mayor Steve Kay said council wanted no reference to a specific bill, so the resolution passed with support of a more general effort to support medical marijuana legislation in Frankfort.

While there was no opposition to the resolution, one council member shared reservations. Councilwoman Amanda Bledsoe was hesitant to speak for her constituents on the issue, though she ultimately voted yes.

"I have a hard time presuming to vote on issues that presume to my district how they feel about issues that they have not elected me to address, to be honest," Bledsoe said.

According the twitter account of Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, Harrison County Fiscal Court voted to unanimously support legalization of medical marijuana as well Tuesday night.

Mason and Bullitt counties have passed similar resolutions along with Maysville and Hillview City Council.
