Kentucky Track and Field Freshman Sydney McLaughlin was named National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

McLaughlin won the SEC 400-meters gold with a time of 50.52 – the second fastest time in collegiate indoor history. McLaughlin set the IAAF World Junior indoor record – previously held by Sanya Richards-Ross (50.82) – and it was the fastest time ever run by a collegiate freshman indoors.

The freshman phenom edged Georgia’s Lynna Irby who finished as runner-up in 50.62 – the fourth fastest time in collegiate indoor history.

McLaughlin clocked a time of 50.97 in the prelims, the fastest non-final performance in collegiate indoor history.

She also ran the third leg on Kentucky’s SEC bronze-medal 4x400m relay.

McLaughlin was named National Athlete of the Week for the second time this season (Dec. 12, 2017).
