State Rep. Files Legislation To Raise Age To Buy Assault-Style Rifles To 21

FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18) — A Kentucky legislator has introduced a bill that would raise the minimum age for legal purchases of assault-style rifles.

Currently, you must be at least 18 to buy weapons like an AR-15. House Bill 498, introduced by state Rep. Chris Harris, would raise the age to 21.

The bill would exempt military and law enforcement officers.

"The fact that it is easier for an 18-year-old in Kentucky to legally purchase an AR-15 than to purchase cold medicine or beer defies commonsense," Harris said in a statement. "By raising the minimum age to 21, we are taking a small step toward better protecting the public; and perhaps preventing or at least minimizing the deaths and injuries like those that occurred in Parkland, Florida.”
