$51,400 Donated Towards School Safety

Posted: Updated:

WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) Officials with the Corbin School System said that they plan to strengthen security after accepting a donation worth more than $50,000 from a Corbin attorney.

Attorney Shane Romines followed through on Monday with the promise he made weeks ago. The $51,400 donation along with the security wands were given to the school to help out their resource officers.

Romines and Corbin Schools Superintendent David Cox said that the donation gives the school system a sigh of relief as they continue facing budget gaps.

"Corbin was in danger of losing the funding. There's a grant for school security resource officers, and they were in danger of losing, what would cost them $104,000. So, Mr. Cox told me if they could get fifty thousand, he could work through the budget to keep those two officers," said Romines.

"Our next step will be to see what happens with the budget when the legislative session is over, but, I did speak with Mr. Romines this morning, and as a representative for all the community members who donated, I told him we would use that money for exactly what we said it was for," said Cox. "We've got two great school resource officers now. Our goal would be to have one in every building."

Romines said that he was planning to make a presentation at Knox Central High and Lynn Camp Schools Monday, That was delayed so school officials could study relating policies regarding Romines' donations.
