(LEX 18) After receiving national criticism, Kentucky lawmakers came one step closer to voting on a bill that would outlaw child marriage. The bill known as the Child Bride Bill has previously been delayed twice.
Many people were shocked to find out that adults were still able to legally marry children under 18 in Kentucky.
Currently, 16 and 17-year-olds in Kentucky can marry with their parents' permission. A girl under the age of 16 can get married if she is pregnant and is going to wed the baby's father. Senate Bill 48 hopes to change that.
Senate Bill 48, also known as the Child Bride Bill would raise the legal age to marry in Kentucky to 18.
Last week, when a Senate committee delayed the bill for a second time, outrage hit social media from across the world. Some blamed The Family Foundation, a non-profit group that advocates for conservative laws, for stalling the bill.
On Tuesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed the bill, moving it to the House. The Family Foundation issued a statement saying that they weren't again the bill, they just wanted to change the part that allowed 17-year-olds to marry with only a judge's permission. Now both parents and a judge will need consent.
