HARRISON COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) The Harrison County Sheriff says that the community has been hit by two different scams in a week's time.
"They're trying to get you to give up information, bank accounts, credit card numbers," said Sheriff Shain Stephens.
Former IRS employee Norma Wells was almost a victim of the scam. She said that the man on the phone said that a lawsuit was about to be filed. She said that it is shocking just how realistic and threatening these scammers sound.
"When they start throwing numbers at you like i-employee numbers, and my name, and they give it so freely you think of it being more legitimate than not," she said.
Wells hung up on the scammers, Googled the number and saw that the person was a scammer.
As a reminder, the IRS will never call to demand immediate payment over the phone, threaten to immediately bring in law enforcement, or ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
"Don't give out that personal information, don't panic, don't pull out that credit card because obviously, that's what they're looking for," said Stephens.
If you suspect something suspicious, report it immediately, and as always, you reserve the right to hang up or never answer at all.
Sheriff Stephens said that the other scams reported involve grandparents being called to bail their grandchildren out of jail. He says under no circumstances should you withdraw money and wire it to a stranger. If you believe you have been the victim of a scam, contact your local sheriff's office.
