Making A Difference: District Says No To Bullying

Posted: Updated:

OWSLEY COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) Students and teachers in Owsley County are taking a stand against bullying. Next week, the district will dedicate time to talk about the harm it can cause and who to talk to if you're being bullied.

Brandon Little Lopez tells LEX 18 that he knows the pain bullying can cause because he's been bullied about his Hispanic heritage.

"Whenever I was a little kid, everyone would say, "hey Mexican you've got your green card? you need to go back to Mexico"," he said.

He said he was able to deal with the insults about his heritage with the help of his family and now, he wants to give that same help to other students.

"Just don't let bullies bring you down. Never give up," he said. Little Lopez and other students worked with teachers in the Owsley County School District's Community Work Transition Program to create anti-bullying week which will start on Monday.

Candace Thomas and her coworkers, Kelsey Taylor and Jessie Jewell at Owsley County schools, say next week will be a chance to put a name to bullying and show that it is not okay.

If you are bullied, they want you to know that you are not alone.

"We want to spread the word of how to report these issues," said Thomas.
