Murder Suspect Enters Surprise Guilty Plea

Posted: Updated:

JESSAMINE COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)-- The man accused in the death of a Nicholasville man has entered a surprise guilty plea.

David Peel is one of two men charged in the death of Mark Dunn. Dunn was killed in 2008. His body was discovered in his burned truck.

Odis Henson pleaded guilty to his role in Dunn's death. He agreed to testify against Peel, telling a judge that he witnessed Peel shoot and kill the victim. He pleaded guilty to arson and evidence tampering and was sentenced to 10 years.

Peel previously wanted the case dismissed because two years' worth of police files were missing and his attorney didn't believe he could get a fair trial.

His attorney has presented the plea as follows:

  • For the charges of second-degree escape, bail jumping, and tampering with prison monitoring device, he would get five years.
  • For a charge of second-degree manslaughter (dropped down from murder), he would get 10 years.
  • For a charge of trafficking heroine in Garrard County, he would get five years.

Under this plea deal, Peel would serve 20 years total.

He will be officially sentenced at 9 a.m. April 9.

The judge will allow the victim’s family to make statements at sentencing.
