OWENSBORO, Ky. (LEX 18/AP) - Billy Joe Miles, a former UK Trustees Chairman and Owensboro businessman has died at the age of 78.
According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, Representative Regina Huff, of Williamsburg, made the announcement at the House Appropriations and Revenue Committee meeting. Rep. Huff asked for a moment of silence in Miles' honor.
Despite his business acumen and political power, Miles' accomplishments had been overshadowed by legal troubles in recent years. Miles was accused of sexually assaulting a health care worker, who was assisting him at his home. Miles was indicted in September 2016 for rape, sodomy, and bribing a witness.
The case was eventually dismissed.
Miles had been suffering from dementia in recent years. He served three terms on the UK board from July 1995 to June 30, 2013. He was also on the search committee that hired University President Lee T. Todd.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
