Police Continue Search For SUV Possibly Involved In Fatal Crash

Posted: Updated:

SHELBY COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) - Kentucky State Police continue searching for the driver of an SUV that may have helped cause a crash that killed a young mother.

KSP says on February 22, Jessica Carter was driving east on I-64 to her job at Toyota when an SUV pulled in front of her in Shelby County.

Police say Carter and the SUV traded positions, and after the tan-colored SUV cut back in front, debris from the SUV started falling in Carter's path.

Carter swerved, lost control, and crashed. The SUV kept driving down I-64.

Jessica's mother, Laverne Carter, tells us that a state trooper and a doctor were among the first to arrive on scene.

"A lot of people did stop and try to render her aid, but the person that did it, I guess they don't have a soul," said Jessica's mother, Laverne Carter.

Jessica later died from her injuries at University of Louisville Hospital.

Right now, KSP is still interviewing witnesses and going over surveillance video from nearby businesses hoping that will help them identify the SUV.

"It just upsets me that someone would do that, and take her life like that," said Carter.

A smile and one word comes to Laverne's mind when asked about her daughter.

"Well, she was my diva. She was 26. She was full of life," said Carter.

A life which included Jessica's daughter, Trinity.

"She four. She's a wonderful little girl, and says you know, her mother is in Heaven with pink and purple wings," said Carter.

Laverne knows Jessica is smiling down, especially on Tuesday, which marked five years for Laverne as a breast cancer survivor.

"Because she knows that I made this milestone of five years, and she knows that I'm gonna take care of her little girl," said Carter.

The family has set up a scholarship fund for Jessica's daughter.
