Pikeville Officer Killed; Police Search For Suspect

Posted: Updated:

PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (EKB/LEX 18) — Police were seeking a suspect after a Pikeville police officer was fatally shot late Tuesday night in the line of duty.

Scotty Hamilton, a 12-year veteran of the force, was killed about 11:30 p.m. while conducting an investigation along with a Kentucky State Trooper near Hurricane Creek.

EKB News reports here that police say they have made no arrests in the case.

On Wednesday, police from several agencies, including a Kentucky State Police Special Response Team, continued to search for a suspect

Pikeville Mayor Jimmy Carter announced Hamilton's death. An internal KSP document shared on social media reveals the name of the shooter, but troopers will not confirm whether the documents are legitimate. LEX 18 will not release the name of the suspect until troopers provide that information.

Police ask anyone with information to contact them at 606-437-5111 or Kentucky State Police at 606-433-7711.

Supporting Heroes, a group that works with families of fallen officers, said Wednesday that Hamilton and the state trooper were investigating a vehicle theft.

"Officer Hamilton followed what appeared to be fresh tracks in the snow leading to the back of the residence. As he peered around the back of the house, he was shot multiple times in ambush. Officer Hamilton was pronounced dead at the scene," according to a statement by the group.

The group said Hamilton is survived by his wife and a 9-month-old daughter.

J.W. Call and Son Funeral Home will handle arrangements.
