Associates Degree Program To Start In Frankfort High School

Posted: Updated:

FRANKFORT, Ky (LEX 18) Imagine walking across the stage at graduation and receiving your high school diploma and an Associate's Degree. Starting next year, that will be a reality for students at Frankfort High School.

"A lot of what we're talking about sounds too good to be true," said Principal John Lyons.

Early College Academy is a partnership program between Frankfort Independent Schools and Kentucky State University. It gives students the chance to take classes that will earn them college credit toward an Associate's Degree in career fields like teaching, health sciences, agriculture and more. And it is all free!

"There's going to be less and less of those classes, for high schoolers, that they have to take and more and more of those classes that they want to take," said Lyons.

Lyons said that their goal is to have 75% of the class of 2022 graduate with an Associate's Degree or technical certification. He's confident they could do even more.

"I really don't see a reason why that we shouldn't have every student that walks across the stage to have more than a diploma," said Lyons.

"I went through cosmetology school and I went through drafting to try to see what career I would like to do, and I feel like this is a good opportunity for everybody else who wants to figure out what they want to do," said Frankfort High School junior Caya Hebert.
