KSP: Officers Use Handshake To Lure Out Barricade Suspect

Posted: Updated:

ELKHORN CITY, Ky. (LEX 18) -  A barricade suspect's good manners ended with him being arrested on a slew of charges.

The standoff situation started in the early morning hours of Friday at a home in the Jimmies Creek community of Elkhorn City. Troopers from Pikeville post were called to a home there after a woman said her son had struck her.

When police arrived, they yelled for the suspect, identified as Dewey Ratliff, to come out with his hands up. A commotion started when police say Dewey jumped out of a back window in the home.

Police chased Dewey around a dog house in his backyard but one of the troopers became tangled up when a dog with a chain began running around his ankles.

Dewey managed to make it back to his house where he armed himself with a sawed-off shotgun.

The suspect's mother told troopers that her 10-year-old son was also in the home. Eventually, Dewey released the 10-year-old, allowing him to climb out of the open window.

Officers approached the residence and asked Ratliff to shake their hands. When he reached extended his arm, the officers grabbed him and pulled him out of the bedroom window.

He was taken into custody without further incident.

Ratliff has been charged with wanton endangerment, assault, criminal mischief and endangering the welfare of the minor and charges related to the shotgun. His mother is expected to be okay.
